Balloon effects in fisheries
In 1992, after the collapse of the Grand Banks cod fishery due to overexploitation, the Canadian government announced a moratorium for the fishing of codfish that was extended indefinitely in 1994. However, instead of quitting their profession, fisherman just moved their efforts into exploiting a rising shrimp population that took over the codfish ecological niche (causing considerable environmental unbalance) and was way more lucrative fishery.
- Frustrated the efforts to address the initial problem
- Cascading (far-reaching effects following each other)
