In addition to the continuing demand for timber, the ever-increasing demand for tree biomass for energy and industrial use requires a more intensive use of forests. As a result, forest plantations are replacing natural forests to meet the growing demand for wood. However, plantations can have negative environmental impacts such as loss of biodiversity, increased water use and problems with land tenure and community rights.

Increased use of plantation forests
The promotion of monoculture tree plantations, driven by climate change objectives and the need for raw materials mainly in the Global North, has negative environmental and social impacts in the Global South. These include negative impacts on biodiversity, water resources, local communities and the climate.
