Socio-economic impact of shift to electric vehicles

The increasing shift to electric vehicles to reduce emissions from the transport sector is reducing the demand for local car production in certain regions as electric vehicles are produced in other countries, causing socio-economic problems in the affected regions.

As the shift to electric vehicles continues and several European countries seek to ban the sale of conventional passenger cars in the coming decades, the automotive industry will need to retrain its workforce and, where this is not possible, people may lose their jobs. This could be a significant problem as millions of people work directly or indirectly in the industry.
